What's Next for Carpathia

For the past couple of years, I've typically blogged a recap of the previous year.  This year, I thought it would be more fitting to look ahead for the next 12 months. We have so many initiatives I'd love to share.

The most recent item is the move to our new corporate headquarters in Dulles, VA. I'd like to thank everyone who came to our Open House this past week.  We had an exceptionally good turnout with roughly 105 guests in attendance – and we enjoyed meeting all of them. During the course of the evening, I conducted a cloud "speed dating" session.   The goal was to describe the Carpathia cloud platform, how it’s differentiated from other clouds and provide a demo in 15 minutes or less.  I did manage to complete 7 sessions in a little over 2 hours - which brought us very close to meeting our goal!  I came to the realization early on that speed dating is typically many to many event, and "dating" 70+ people in one evening was somewhat of a challenge :).

While cloud will continue to be a dominant technology theme for 2011, it’s the tip of the iceberg for what we have planned.  Carpathia sees cloud as a technology in our toolset - just like managed and colocation to help solve customer’s IT problems and reach new levels of efficiency.  I'm confident it will continue to be a dominant aspect of our portfolio and intertwined with all we do during 2011.

Carpathia's strategy for 2011 is very crisp – very much like it was in 2010.  As such, I thought I’d take advantage of testing my elevator pitch on our guests at the open house:

1. We specialize in complex hosting.  The complex part comes from our ability to run mission critical infrastructure.  Complex doesn't always have to mean large.  We are fortunate enough to have customers trust us with a wide range of complex solutions that range from online services to back office systems.

2. We are leaders in compliant hosting.  In today’s IT infrastructure, there are very few customers with no compliance requirements.  Our government customers have FISMA, DIACAP and many other mandates and requirements; our healthcare customers have HIPAA and HITECH; and our financial services customers range from PCI to GLBA.  There are also many who have developed their own policies and procedures based on their specific business needs.  Most of these published standards are under a major refresh cycle over the next 12 months.

So with this being our strategy, our portfolio to deliver services to embrace this strategy is also very crisp.  We deliver three categories of services: colocation, managed hosting and cloud hosting.  Carpathia helps customers select those (or all) that best fits their needs.  No matter what solutions a customer requires, they are all delivered with the same degree of rigor "enterprise class".

With that, I wish everyone a prosperous 2011 and encourage you to watch this space…

Thanks, Leslie I hadn\'t even thought about that I was just using a Word Cloud to give me pespiectrve on my own blog, but you are right: students could make use of this wonderful, creative tool as a part of an activity that contributes to personalizing learning. For example, it would be valuable for students to create a word cloud using their own recent journal entries in order to gain pespiectrve on common themes emerging in their writing. Then, these common themes could provide direction for choosing further units of study. If a teacher saw 25 different students\' word clouds and noticed that more than half of them prominently featured the word dog , then that could indicate a good direction for a next lesson theme. Fun! It is great to learn new tools and get creative with them. Thanks Leslie, sometimes an idea is right under our nose and we need a friend to point it out!
